Fort Mifflin After Action Report

Let me start by saying…..RAIN. Lots and lots of rain. When Legio XIIII GMV arrived on site of Fort Mifflin it was roughly 4:30 in the afternoon. There were no other vehicles around, which was odd due to the event being a timeline. We met the director of the Fort Craig who basically gave us full reign of the place. Turns out, we were the only organization who did not pull out of the event for the weekend. Our set up was relatively small compared to what we usually put on display, mostly because of the forecast. Legio XIIII GMV Cohort II had 6 members total for the day. Camp was set up on Friday with many interruptions due to incoming air traffic landing at Philadelphia International Air Port. Once camp was set up, several of our members ventured to a nearby restaurant for dinner. Saturday morning brought a lot of mist and over cast skies. We all met up at Denny’s for what was supposed to be a quick breakfast which turned into an almost two hour ordeal. Once finished we rushed back to camp to get ready for the gates to open. The event was not attended by many spectators as we had hoped, but there was a decent sized group of scouts who picked through all the gear we brought and threw pila and plumbatas (ancient lawn darts) into the drill field. Several other small groups of visitors wandered through camp. Everyone who came up to our camp was very engaging and appreciated that we were there despite the terrible weather. Most of the day we hunkered down under the fly to keep our gear mostly dry. Although the event was sparsely attended, we did happen to pick up three new potential recruits who were eager to get started! Shortly after 2PM we caught a slight break in the rain and decided to break camp and start heading home. Of course, half way through packing up the rain really picked up and completely drenched us. We all said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways until the next event. Regardless of the weather and lack of spectators, we all had a good time hanging out and strengthening our comradery. To the new folks who signed up today, let me give you a warm welcome and look forward to seeing you grow in your love of history and becoming valuable assets to Legio XIIII GMV Cohort II.
