How do I get started in reenacting?
Getting started in reenacting is easier than most people think. You don’t need to show up day one with a full kit, or years of knowledge.
The first step is just to reach out. All of our membership would be eager to answer questions, invite you to an event, or arrange a time to meet and talk about what we do. This gives you a chance to see if the hobby, and our Cohort would be a good fit for you.
If you decide to join, you will be paired with an experienced mentor to help guide you through the basics: historical background, expectations at events, authenticity standards and how to build your impression correctly.
New members are also given a handbook that lays out the standards, and where to obtain some of the items needed for your impression.
Most importantly, you do not need to purchase everything right away. We maintain loaner equipment so new recruits can participate, learn, and experience events before investing in their own gear.
-
What gear do I need to come to an event?
For new members, or those interested in attending their first event, getting started is simple and accessible. You only need a few basic items to participate: a tunic, a belt, and a pair of appropriate shoes for your impression (military or civilian.) These essentials are enough to allow you to partake in the experience and begin learning about Roman living history.
We strive to make reenacting approachable, and affordable so there is no need to invest in a full kit right away. Additional gear can be acquired over time as your interest grows, and loaner equipment may be available to help you get started.
-
Is this hobby safe?
Reenacting is a safe and rewarding hobby when everyone follows the established rules and safety guidelines. We do use real steel swords and historically accurate weapons, but they are handle with strict safety standards in place. Training, supervision, and clear expectations ensure that everyone understands how to act responsibility around weapons at all times.
That said, as with any hands on hobby, occasional minor accidents can happen. Safety is always our top priority, as we plan accordingly. We have real life trained medical personnel within our ranks, as well as a fully stocked first aid kits on site.
When rules are followed, and common sense is applied, reenacting is a safe, structured, and enjoyable way to bring history to life.

Are there dues to join Legio XIIII GMV?
Absolutely not! We believe that your commitment is best demonstrated not through dues, but through your dedication to research, authenticity and building your kit is investment enough. Your time, effort, and passion are what truly strengthen our ranks
-
Do you camp out on events?
At our events, members choose the experience that suits them best. Many enjoy fully immersing themselves by camping on site, embracing the atmosphere of living history from dawn to dusk. Others prefer the comfort and convenience of nearby hotels after the day’s activities conclude. Whether under canvas or in town, everyone comes together in the field with the same shared purpose and comradery.
-
Do you cook your own food?
We always aim to organize communal cooking at events for a small fee for the weekend. Sharing meals strengthens camaraderie and the immersive experience. However, weather and site conditions do not always cooperate, so all members should be prepared to feed themselves if necessary. In some cases, food vendors may be available on site, offering another convenient option. Being flexible and prepared ensures everyone stays comfortable and ready for the weekend’s activities.
-
Is there any requirement to attend all of the events?
Attendance at every event is never required. This is a hobby and real life takes precedence. We understand that work, family and other responsibilities come first. Join us when you can, stay as long as you are able, and head home when you must. That said, we always look forward to seeing all of our membership in the field whenever your schedule allows.
-
Do I need to present information to people?
We encourage all of our members to feel comfortable engaging with the public, but we never expect anyone to know everything. Part of living history is learning as we go, asking questions, and continually growing in our knowledge. No one is expected to be a scholar, but building a well rounded understanding of our time period helps create a richer, more meaningful experience for both our members and the spectators we interact with.
At the same time, everyone tends to develop a special niche they are especially passionate about. Whether it’s equipment, food, daily life, medicine, religion or other material culture. When we discover those individual interested, we are happy to direct spectators to that member as our “resident expert” on the topic. It not only builds confidence, but also enhances the experience for the public by connecting them with someone who truly enjoys sharing that particular aspect of history.
-
Can my whole family join?
Families are always welcome in our Cohort, and history itself supports that inclusion. Modern research has show that civilian communities, known as a Vicus often developed alongside Roman forts, where families, merchants and craftsmen lived and worked in close connection with the garrison.
At the same time, all civilians and children are expected to uphold the same high standards of authenticity as our Legionaries. Whether portraying a soldier, merchant, craftsperson or family member, everyone contributes equally to the overall impression we present to the public.
-
Do you get paid to do this?
As a living history organization, we are not paid performers, every member of our Cohort is a volunteer driven by genuine passion for the past. We do this because we love it. Our goal is to bring history off the page and into the tangible world allowing people to see, hear and experience it in a meaningful way.
Each of us dedicates a great deal of personal time to research, ensuring that what we present is grounded in solid historical evidence. Byeond that, we invest countless hours crafting, and maintaining our own equipment, improving our kits, and refining our skills. From hand sewn garments, to carefully constructed armor and tools, much of what we use is the result of our own labor and study.
This commitment reflects not just a hobby, but a shared passion for authenticity and education. A desire to honor the past by presenting it as accurately and responsibly as we can.
-
How far are most events?
Most of our events are located within a 4 to 8 hour drive from York, Pennsylvania, keeping us primarily active throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This allows our members to travel to quality events while still maintaining a manageable distance for a weekend commitment. That said, we are always looking for new and exciting opportunities to expand our horizons. If there is an event outside our usual range that aligns with our mission and standards, we are always open to exploring new locations and bringing our impression to new audiences.
-
What if I live outside of the normal range of the Cohort?
Even if you live outside our usual Mid-Atlantic range, does not mean you can’t be involved. Our Legion has members spread across the United States, and we regularly participate in events in various regions of the country. We are always happy to connect prospective recruits with members from other Cohorts of the Legion who live closer to them. So no matter where you are located, there is a good chance you can still take part in the Legion’s activities and camaraderie.

Do I need to learn Latin?
Members are not required to learn Latin in order to participate within the Cohort. While Latin was the language of the Roman army, we understand this is a hobby and not a classroom requirement.
That said, during our public drill demonstrations commands are given in Latin to maintain historical authenticity and provide a more immersive experience for spectators. New recruits will quickly become familiar with the basic drill commands simply through repetition and participation. No prior knowledge is necessary. You will learn what you need naturally as part of the training program.
